SmartSite radar coverage

SmartSite Control

What it does: Radar images come from about 160 radar stations across the U.S. Each station sees storms best when they are close. Farther away, its beam passes over the storm and misses what is happening near the ground. SmartSite automatically uses the station with the best view and switches when a better one takes over.

Optimize radar coverage for

Location mode

SmartSite only works when the radar shows a single station (L1 or L2 products). Switch the radar from this nationwide view to a station view to use it.

SmartSite is picking the best station for the area around your location.

About StormTrak

StormTrak helps you explore nearby precipitation, recent radar movement, and storms. Use StormTrak for free with no account or payment required.

Optional Plus and Pro subscriptions are available. Compare Free, Plus and Pro, and optional add-ons.

This is an experimental weather tool, not an emergency alert service. Projections assume unchanged motion. Storms can change quickly. An off-path result or an empty map does not mean you are safe.

Follow National Weather Service instructions immediately. Keep another way to receive warnings, including when this page is closed.

Recent radar movement describes how nearby precipitation patterns have moved between observed scans. It does not establish whether precipitation will reach your exact location or when it will arrive. This assessment remains separate from official warnings and tracked storm-cell projections.

Storm paths cover the contiguous United States. Tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings, plus supported NWS winter and cold alerts, are included. Other hazard types are not comprehensive; always check official NWS information.

Radar: IEM / NOAA. Precipitation and recent pattern movement: NOAA MRMS data interpreted by StormTrak. Warnings, forecasts and station observations: NWS. Storm objects: NOAA/CIMSS ProbSevere. Place search: GeoNames. Map: CARTO / OpenStreetMap. Particle wind: NOAA/NCEP GFS model forecasts for wind 10 m above ground; interpolated by StormTrak and separate from storm movement.
